MSc International Business and Management

Introduction

The MSc International Business and Management is designed for new or recent graduates and those with management experience. This programme goes beyond just providing students with a thorough grounding in vital business and management practices and the contexts in which they operate. The course philosophy focuses upon the role of modern business and management and the varied and sometimes complex mixture of knowledge and skills that drive the revenue streams of those modern entities. Modern businesses have become more diverse. The balance of power has shifted significantly in favour of the customer, who now has more control of the relationship than ever before, and technology has brought in new media channels and cultural norms.

    Students will be involved in live management issues through various projects and assessments, developing leadership and management skills, and undertaking both group-based and individual work. Students are also invited to guest lectures by practising managers, each of whom has extensive experience in their particular field. 100% coursework-based assessments.

    The course is delivered in Hanbridge Institute in Singapore, taught under the School of Business, based on business-entrepreneurial centric philosophy coupled with University of Suffolk’s powerful and rigorous curriculum. Admission Requirements:

  • Hold a degree with a 2:2 minimum classification or equivalent from undergraduate degree in a relevant subject
  • or; a professional qualification of graduate status
  • or; a Higher National Certificate (UK) or Higher National Diploma (UK) or equivalent at least 30 years of age with minimum 8 years of working experience (including three years management experience)
  • or; at least 30 years of age with minimum 8 years of working experience (including 5 years of significant management experience)

English Language Proficiency:

  • Minimum C6 in English Language at Singapore GCE ‘O’ Level or equivalent
  • IELTS (Academic or UKVI): 6.5 overall, and a minimum of 5.5 in each component
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic): CEFR C1 Level
  • University of Suffolk Password Skills Test: 6.5/7.0 overall, and a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
*Note: Non-native speakers of English will be given an English Proficiency test. Those who do not meet the required English standard will need to enrol for Hanbridge Institute’s Certificate in Standard English Course. Applicants whose English language level does not meet the minimum requirement can sit for an English Proficiency assessment to determine their English Language proficiency level.

Course Structure and Synopsis

The course is designed to maximise students’ exposure to the real business world. Our excellent industry connections allow our students to have the opportunity to experience a range of additional workshops, and industry trips and visit. Students will have opportunities to participate in regional business and entrepreneurship competitions and visited local organisations. You will regularly hear from guest speakers who offer their insight and experience to add value to your classes. We also make use of these connections to help in assessments and you will work on live case studies and projects throughout your study.

  • Knowledge Management and Information Systems
    This course introduces the various information and communications management technologies. Students will research and practice using modern productivity applications. Students will examine how information systems are used to solve problems and make better business decisions and apply these concepts to analyse business cases in real life. In this module students will also develop a viable Knowledge Management idea through a series of student–led activities, personal tutorials and case study. They will use this experience as a vehicle to better understand themselves as a knowledgeable person focusing on the skills that they need to develop and manage their own enterprises.
  • Business Research Methods
    The purpose of this module is twofold: to examine the use of systematic research approaches to help build understanding of specific business contexts; and to prepare students for the extended projector dissertation as part of their level 7 studies. In this module, students will develop their investigative and analytical skills. They will learn about arange of methods and methodologies for collecting and analysing data and develop their own approach to a research project connected with an area of business or management.
  • Innovative Entrepreneurial Society: New Business Models
    Society since the advent of the 21st century have increasingly sought to understand entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial activities in the wake of economic and social transformation. Thus researchers, policy makers and practitioners have sought to gain insight on the implications of an innovative entrepreneurial society. This module aims to explore the entrepreneurial decision-making environment, taking into account stakeholder opportunities, as well as providing the student with the techniques and skills required to optimise their choices in a complex venturing, social and digital context. The module thus covers activities of both profit seeking and social enterprises.
  • International Business
    International Business is designed to engage students with the key concepts, models, debates and problems in the study of international business. Students will learn about the workings of international business organisations, and how they interact with the business environment. The module also considers how international business organisations are managed, including the strategies used to guide them and the decisions involved in the role of manager or owner. It is helpful to view this initial course as an opportunity to develop a solid framework of knowledge and competence, as well as a critical academic human relation, technology in business, ethical behaviour, the environment, quality, products and services, functional management, and current issues and developments. This module will also provide students with the opportunity to develop skills of analysis and problem solving which they can use in their future careers.
  • Managing People Effectively in an International Context
    This module aims to provide students with a broad introduction to managing people effectively across different country contexts through the introduction of key concepts, theories and contemporary practices. It considers the global challenges of developing and implementing international human resource management strategy.  Resourcing and developing talent will be assessed through the diffusion of HRM practices in multinational enterprises. This module also explores cross cultural interactions from an organisational and leadership perspective and how to lead and manage effectively both across and within different cultures.
  • Strategic International Marketing
    This module will provide students with a practical understanding of how companies design and implement international marketing strategies. Students will explore both the theoretical background of international marketing concepts as well as their application in today's fast-changing and rapidly growing digital marketing landscape to ensure that they gain an appreciation of international marketing in action. In this module students will assess how contemporary marketing practices in different organisations and sectors achieve marketing objectives and then apply this knowledge in real business settings. This module will provide them with an understanding of current digital marketing technology and consider its impact on contemporary international marketing practice.
  • Managerial Economics and Finance
    The purpose of this module is twofold: to examine the use of agency relations between owners, managers and employees and the contribution of economics in strategic management and corporate governance; and to understand the empirical and theoretical aspects of capital budgeting, market efficiency, portfolio theory, asset pricing models, capital structure and dividend policy.
  • Dissertation
    The dissertation demands a high level of individual application and commitment to research. It provides students with an opportunity to identify, reflect on and explore a topic in significant detail. That topic should fall under one or more of the following broader themes: organization, management, work, business. Students’ research may constitute either a traditional academic project or an applied management report.

Exemptions to modules:

Candidates who have relevant qualifications and work experience may be able to gain exemptions from modules subject to Academic Board approval in accordance with the University of Suffolk’s Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (RPL). The final decision of exemptions given by Academic Board on academic judgment is not appealable, however, we do allow appeals about RPL decisions on the basis of procedural irregularity or prejudice/bias. An exemption fees is payable upon applications. All students who attend the MBA in Singapore are students of the University of Suffolk, UK and will be accorded the same status as who study at the UK campus. Upon graduation, they will become an alumnus of the University of Suffolk.  All certificates of awards and transcripts are issued by the University of Suffolk and are recognised global.
